Over half of cable drums supplied by Prysmian Cables and Systems are sent to landfill by electrical contractors every year, when they could be recycled for free using the company’s nationwide drum collection service.
The company says it supplies around 14,000 cable drums a year to the electrical contracting industry, of which a staggering 8,000 drums are never returned. As a result of replacing the drums 1,600 trees are lost and 480 tonnes of CO2 is released into the atmosphere, in addition to another 320 tonnes from the burning or disposal at landfill each year.
Phil Simon, UK logistics manager at Prysmian Cables and Systems said: “Wooden cable drums can be re-used approximately five times, which helps us to reduce the amount of new packaging we produce. The pick up service already exists, but not enough contractors are taking advantage of it.”
