Purnell to play leading role at Interserve

Purnell becomes a prominent player within these companies at an important stage of their growth, as both look to consolidate their position within the City and expand their operations throughout the regions.

“John’s role is to constructively challenge and contribute to the strategy of the company, and work with the management to ensure that business objectives are met,” said Mike Crump, managing director at First Security (Guards).

“In particular,” continued Crump, “he’ll be looking at the issue of risk management to ensure that robust procedures are set and adhered to at all times.”

Purnell will be known to most (if not all) of SMT Online’s readers. He enjoyed a distinguished 35-year career with the police service, retiring in the rank of Deputy Assistant Commissioner. Latterly, John served as group director responsible for loss prevention and security with the Tesco Group, reporting directly to CEO Sir Terry Leahy.

Roles in the wider community

Purnell has been a stalwart of – and champion for – The Worshipful Company of Security Professionals, having served as Master and also playing his fullest part in establishing the Hear4U service.

John is currently acting as the Representative Deputy Lieutenant for the London Borough of Harrow, and at the same time holds a non-executive role with business risk specialist the Inkerman Group.

Commenting on this latest venture of his, John told SMT Online: “Of course it’s early days at the moment, but I’ve made a start by getting to know the people which is extremely important. I’m very much looking forward to working with Mike and his team.”
