The gathering of security professionals has been orchestrated by The Security Institute’s recruitment director Andrew Nicholls, and is being held at Browns Restaurant in George Square, Glasgow between 3.00 pm and 5.00 pm on Thursday 29 November.
Generously sponsored by Russel Kerr (managing director at Glasgow-based security solutions provider SecuriGroup, the prime objective for the afternoon is to raise awareness about the Institute and to introduce potential new members.
On the day there will also be several topical security-related presentations. These are eligible for CPD points, and certificates of attendance will be available.
Light refreshments will be available from 2.30 pm. The event will then begin at 3.00 pm with a presentation by chief superintendent Andrew Morris from the National Police Reform Team about the reorganisation of the Scottish police service.
This presentation is to be followed by a discourse on the Cross-sector Safety and Security Communications (CSSC) project that operated so well during Olympics.
To close the afternoon’s formal proceedings Allan Burnett QPM will talk about mitigating the risks posed by terrorism.
At 4.00 pm there will be a networking session and the serving of light refreshments.
Speaking about the event, Andrew Nicholls told Info4Security: “I very much hope that locally-based Institute members will be able to join us and look forward to seeing them there. In order to avoid any disappointment I would urge everyone who’s interested in attending to book their place as soon as possible as spaces will be limited. I would also ask everyone who’s coming along to consider inviting a potential new Institute member.”
Places at the event are priced at GB pound 20 per person, but if Institute members bring a potential new member with they can purchase a double ticket for just GB pound 30.

The Security Institute’s all-new website now up-and-running
The Security Institute’s redesigned and revamped website is now up-and-running. There’s no change of URL (see the link at the foot of this article), but there are plenty of new features targeted at members, fellows and associates alike.
Those new features include:
- listing of all The Security Institute’s members, alphabetically and by business category
- Photo albums of events (including the recent Annual Conference)
- full details of Board members covering the Main Board, the Validation Board, the Academic Board and the new Standards Board
- application information for the Register of Chartered Security Professionals
- online bookings facility for the full programme of events this Autumn, including an interactive calendar with maps
- share buttons for social media
Online CPD tracking system
‘Members only’ content is now included across the site rather than in a special area. Members log in once, and then have access to everything their membership grade entitles them to.
The Security Institute’s general manager Di Thomas added: “We’re also launching the online CPD tracking system, and everyone who has previously registered with us for CPD, plus all students, graduates and Chartered Security Professionals will have automatic access to this – but only once they’ve logged in.”
Thomas continued: “If anyone wants to register for the new system then please contact us.” Further ‘How To’ information is being posted to the Frequently Asked Questions page.
“This is just the start,” explained Thomas. “There’s further new functionality to be rolled out over the coming weeks, including polls and forums, and we have prepared pages ready for the Knowledge Centre and the Centre for Cyber Security. This new Content Management System and online CPD system is a major investment by the Institute. Please let us know your first impressions, and if you have ideas on how we can make more of it then please do share them with us.”
