At the Central Criminal Court, ‘The Old Bailey’, Nigel Churton MBE – (then) the Master of The Worshipful Company of Security Professionals – was joined by the Right Honourable Alderman David Wootton, the Lord Mayor of the City of London, Alderman and Sheriff Alan Yarrow and Sheriff Wendy Mead CC to launch the 2012 Sheriffs’ Award.
Also present to witness the launch and the unveiling of the Sheriff’s Award Honours Board were six past Sheriffs, two past award winners, five Judges, Liverymen and guests from the City and the Old Bailey
Sheriff Wendy Mead said: “One of the highlights of a privileged year in office as Sheriff of this great City of London is to be part of a scheme which recognises acts of extraordinary public service, often realised under duress and in dangerous situations. This is all the more commendable in a climate of detachment engendered by the fear of becoming involved shown by the vast majority of the public. As Sheriff, I have read amazing citations of many remarkable people who have disregarded their own safety to protect the safety and well-being of others. I’m proud to present awards to these gallant and selfless individuals.”
Although the Sheriffs’ Award belongs to the City of London, nominations are sought from across England and Wales and are open to any person as well as members of the emergency services and the Armed Forces.
The intention is to formally recognise the individual who, without thought for their own safety, has acted to confront danger to another or their property and to celebrate such selflessness as an inspiration to other citizens.
Presentation at the WCoSP Annual Dinner
The Sheriffs’ Award is a highly prestigious one. In addition to receiving a trophy, a framed certificate and a cheque for GB pound 2,000, by order of the Sheriffs, the winner’s name is permanently inscribed both on an Honours Board and in a Book of Honour which are on permanent display at the Central Criminal Court – The Old Bailey.
The 2012 Sheriffs’ Award will be presented by the Sheriffs at The Worshipful Company of Security Professionals’ Annual Dinner. This is being held at Fishmongers’ Hall on Tuesday 16 October 2012.
The Awards of Certificates to the runners-up will be presented at the Worshipful Company’s Common Hall – a large formal occasion held at Vintners’ Hall in the City of London on Monday 26 November. In both instances, travel and accommodation costs will be reimbursed.
In an official statement, The Worshipful Company of Security Professionals comments: “Our Livery Company is immensely proud to be associated with this award and we urge you to take any steps you might consider appropriate to record instances of bravery which become known to you and may be forwarded for consideration when called for.”
To ensure that your candidate is considered by the judging committee, nominations need to be received by 1 August 2012.
