The Regulator has now published proposed training content for each of the licensable activities and is inviting the private security industry to comment on its latest proposals.
In essence, the specifications outline what an individual needs to know and be able to do in the role of security operative. The content also includes suggestions from industry representatives, various Awarding Bodies and, indeed, Skills for Security.
Response forms should be returned to the Regulator to arrive on or before Friday 5 December. All responses will be assessed and proposed training content amended if it’s felt that this is the right course of action to take.
Subsequently, the revised documents – aimed at Cash-in-Transit, close protection, door supervision, Public Space Surveillance (CCTV), security guarding and vehicle immobilisation personnel – will then be published for further consultation in early 2009.
On its official web site, the SIA comments: “Remember… The licence-linked qualifications are intended for individuals entering the private security industry. Their purpose is to ensure that the individual is capable of performing their duties in a manner that will not cause harm to themselves or any member of the public. The qualifications are meant to address the core areas of a security role – they are not intended to cover all of the training that an operative could possibly have. Please also remember that the licence-linked qualifications are compulsory.”

Chief Executive addresses door supervisors
On 6 November, the SIA’s chief executive Mike Wilson will be attending the fourth annual Safer Doors Conference, the venue for which is the Bridlington Spa Royal Hall in East Yorkshire. Wilson is also due to speak at the event, looking at how the Regulator is progressing while also mapping out its plans for the future of the private security sector.
The SIA’s development manager Tony Holyland is also due to give a discourse focusing on the competency renewal process.
