Sir Ken Knight confirmed as government’s new chief advisor on fire

[

London fire chief Sir Ken Knight has been appointed as the Government’s new chief fire and rescue advisor. He is due to take up the post this summer.

The new role replaces Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Fire abolished earlier this year, and has been created by the government to advise ministers and senior staff on the structure, organisation and performance of fire and rescue services. The chief fire advisor and his unit will also have a role during a major emergency.

The Unit will identify and disseminate good practice to fire and rescue services and continue the drive to reduce fire deaths. It will also advise and liaise with government, local authorities, professional bodies and other interested organisations on fire, rescue and resilience matters.

“I am immensely proud of the work that the fire and rescue service undertakes to reduce and mitigate the effects of fire and other emergencies whilst providing a fast, professional and safe response,” said Sir Ken. “The Service has an expanding role to play in the community as a trusted and reliable partner. I am delighted to continue to play my part in the reforms of the fire and rescue service and the challenges ahead as the government’s chief fire and rescue advisor.”
