While watching the rather surreal sight of Sex Pistol John Lydon talking politics rather than Country Life butter on last night’s Question Time, I found myself mulling over possibilities for this week’s entry in our Songs About Security Strand.
My deliberations didn’t really take that long. There has been a consistent theme on the site this week. Awards.
We’ve reported on the BSIA’s 2012 Security Personnel Awards – at which new Trade Association chairman Geoff Zeidler gave an excellent speech – and Julie Kenny CBE DL’s First Woman Award.
Then there’s the National CCTV User Group Awards coverage and a Call for Papers from The Security Institute for this year’s Wilf Knight Award.
Like I said, a lot of awards, people!
Eyes on the Glittering Prize
In honour of all the winners and finalists mentioned, we thought we’d introduce a band to you that’s never before appeared on Info4Security. The mighty Scottish rockers Simple Minds, and their 1982 hit Glittering Prize.
The track appeared on the band’s fifth (and hugely successful) studio album New Gold Dream, and reached 16th spot in the charts in the wake of previous single Promised You A Miracle.
The video you’re about to watch (below) alternates between two main stages. The first one is set in a golden room where band members Jim Kerr, Charlie Burchill and Mick MacNeil perform the track. The other stage is set in a dark, museum-like room under the surveillance of a napping security officer (not good) and features hanging portraits of the band members’ faces all made of gold.
The story then unfolds as a young woman painted in gold visits the room and reaches out to a sarcophagus within which lies a pharaoh version of Jim Kerr. Spooky.
After having touched his face and brought the other band members back to life she then drives away with them.
Thanks to his flashlight, the security officer eventually twigs that a burglary has taken place. At this point we find the woman – by now in the golden room – taking her ease in a long chair and sipping on a cocktail.
Enjoy your weekend, folks…
