Strong bollards built on shallow foundations

Built just 20cm (8″) into the ground, the SP bollards could help protect airports, shop fronts and office buildings from vehicle-borne attacks.

Typical counter-terror bollard systems need foundations 1.5m (5′) deep, which can cause concern for planners and specifiers. ATG said that, because its new bollards require so little space underground, they can be installed on pavements, on top of bridges and in other locations unsuitable for deep-rooted obstacles.

David Sutton, an engineering spokesman for ATG, thinks the future lies in shallow foundation products.

“In modern city centres the need for ultra-strong products which are buried to a minimal depth is phenomenal, and our SP range is streets ahead of the competition,” he said.

The bollards were tested in accordance with the PAS68 standard and successfully deflected an impact with a 7.5 tonne (15,000lb) truck travelling at 40mph (65kph).

“We are extremely proud to have engineered a product that can perform to this level in such a shallow foundation,” Sutton added.
