Gordon Brown flew into Baghdad today for his first visit to Iraq since becoming Prime Minister.

The visit comes as the Daily Telegraph revealed that the PM is to pave the way for a substantial reduction in the number of British troops in Iraq by early next year when MPs return to Parliament on Monday.

Details of every phone call made in Britain must be made accessible to government departments, some quangos and 475 local councils as well as police and security services, under a new law that came into force yesterday.

The SAS has joined the hunt for a killer in southern Baghdad who has executed 19 people at close range with a single shot to the head in the past two weeks.

United States military sources confirmed that units from the Special Air Service have been drafted in to operate alongside 10th American Special Forces hunting the assassin in the Dora district of Baghdad.

“We deal with the SAS all the time,” said one US officer. “They are in the AO (area of operation) on this.”
