Awareness of intelligent video applications “climbing” says Axis

Practitioners in the secureity industry are recognising that network video products are now delivering high quality output, and can no longer be excluded from security projects on these grounds. That is one of the central findings of a research project conducted by Axis Communications at January’s IIPSEC Exhibition.

Nearly a third of respondents to the survey (comprising installers, resellers/integrators, manufacturers, end users and consultants) said they felt improvements in the quality of output and functionality of network cameras is the most significant technical development driving the adoption of IP surveillance in 2007.

Nearly a third of those visitors to IIPSEC questioned by Agility PR saw remote monitoring via the Internet as the key benefit of switching to IP-based surveillance, with 22% opting instead for improved quality of output. Lack of knowledge and skills among the security installer community was seen as the key obstacle to the take-up of IP by 27% of those visitors questioned, 31% of whom were traditional CCTV distributors and installers.

In terms of the vertical markets, the education and transport sectors were considered equal in importance when it comes to leading the take-up of IP surveillance systems.

Educating the marketplace is still seen as the key to delivering success. Respondents were keenest for Axis and other notable IP surveillance vendors to continue to devote resources to educating end users and installers on the benefits of this high tech security solution.

Security managers are still the leading decision-makers according to over 30% of the survey respondents, with IT directors, financial directors and facilities managers each responsible for making the decision on security buying in three out of every five purchases.

Talking to SMT about the survey results, Axis Communications’ UK managing director Steve Gorski commented: “This year’s survey certainly shows that IP surveillance is becoming far more mainstream, and is now regarded as the best choice in terms of output quality. There is excitement concerning the new intelligent video (IV) applications, which customers are now demanding. Respondents to the survey can see the quality of IP images improving all the time, with enhanced functionality coming through.”

76% of respondents at IIPSEC thought applications such as Automatic Number Plate Recognition, people counting and ‘trip-wire’ zoning were valuable for the end user, with 58% planning to becoming involved in intelligent video applications at some point during 2007.
