Speaking at County Hall on Wednesday Johnson said that making Londoners feel safer on public transport was a top priority and why he had chosen this to be his first spending commitment of the mayoral campaign.
Johnson said he would spend GB pound 150,000 on a live CCTV trial of 20 chosen routes over a six month period to assess the success of the scheme before rolling it out across the network.
Images would either be transmitted direct to a control or to hand held devices.
The trial routes would be chosen in consultation with the Metropolitan Police.
“The days of feeling intimidated on our buses will be over under a Johnson Mayoralty,” he said.
The Johnson campaigns estimates that the cost of installing the equipment would be around GB pound 3,000 per bus, with a running cost of around GB pound 30 a month.
Transport for London has previously done a small-scale trial of similar technology offered by Integrated Security Solutions (ISS). But, they are reported to have shelved plans for a wider six-month trial.
Some estimates put the cost of installing the system on all buses at the GB pound 20m mark.
