The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) wants to ramp up the technology used for securing the Delhi airport in the form of improved video scanning through CCTV cameras.
Such cameras can automatically alert security personnel whenever any suspicious movement is detected. For instance, if a bag has been left behind for over a minute or an unauthorised person is carrying a weapon or someone is lying on the floor, it will issue an alert.
“It is time to move on from usual CCTV cameras. Globally, agencies are now using intelligent cameras for airport security. The cameras come with built-in video analytics and are designed to detect specific activities and scan for suspicious individuals. We are in touch with airport operators to install such cameras at Delhi airport,” said a senior CISF official, requesting anonymity.
For instance, photos of wanted terrorists can be stored in the system and their entry into the airport can be monitored more easily. Using facial recognition technology, the camera will alert the control room and direct the nearest security personnel to nab him.
Similarly using behavioral recognition technology, cameras can be programmed to detect incidents such as objects that have been left behind, congestion, reverse movement through checkpoints, and cars spending too much time parked in one spot outside the building. “The good thing about this is we can program it as per the requirement. Even the walking style of a passenger can bring him in suspicious category and intelligent cameras will help us for profiling of such persons,” the official added.
Apart from that, the CISF wants CCTV coverage on roads leading to the airport for a range of at least 5 km around. At the airport’s check-post, cameras having facilities of facial recognition and number plate reader are installed. Since there are three approach roads to Terminal 3 alone, the sophisticated cameras installed at the check-post will help security agencies to trace a vehicle even after it leaves the airport area.
