I4S video: Simon Banks on 100 in 100 2012

At IFSEC International 2011, a number of lead bodies across the UK security space joined forces to launch the 100 in 100 campaign – the basic idea being to urge companies on a collective basis to take on 100 new apprentices in the security sector between the show and the Security Excellence Awards.

Key drivers behind the move were Simon Banks (co-founder and director at CSL DualCom) and David Greer (CEO at Skills for Security), with support from the National Security Inspectorate, the Security Systems and Alarms Inspection Board and the British Security Industry Association – represented by CEO’s Jeff Little, Geoff Tate and James Kelly respectively.

Well, 100 in 100’s official Media Partner Info4Security/UBM was delighted to report on the phenomenal success of the scheme.

Now, it’s time for Part 2. 100 in 100 2012 launches in the IFSEC Select Lounge on Monday 14 May as part of IFSEC International 2012 Week at the NEC in Birmingham. The launch takes place at 11.00 am in Hall 3a.

100 in 100 2012: the underlying reasons

Speaking exclusively to Brian Sims – media solutions manager for UBM Live’s Security and Fire Portfolio – Simon Banks explained: “We were only supposed to place 100 apprentices but we actually managed to place 184 into work. There is a growing need to get younger people into work. We want everyone to help us realise an even better result this time around.”

Graduate employment is also an issue just now. Commendably, CSL DualCom has taken on several graduates from disciplines outwith security (such as architecture) and Banks described them as “enthused” and “connected with society once again” now that they’re firmly on the career ladder.

In our exclusive pre-IFSEC International 2012 video interview, Banks also explains the successful elements underpinning the CSL DualCom business model and outlines several of the new solutions the company will be launching at IFSEC International 2012 (including the Calibre range).

Meeting with the skills minister

Back to 100 in 100 2012, the Government’s skills minister John Hayes has invited Banks and the other leading lights of the campaign to Parliament in July for a meeting to discuss the whole apprenticeships issue. It’s a massive step forward, as Banks outlined.

“This puts the spotlight on the security industry in a very positive way. It’s good for installers. It shows that the powers in Westminster care about the protection of property and the progression of UK security.”
