The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) will use latest technology to detect the health of its sewer network. The water board has been maintaining 6,780-kilometre sewer network in the city. To start with, the water board would use robotic CCTVs and acoustic profiler to study the 18.8-km length of sewer trunk main between Jeedimetla (IDPL) and Amberpet sewage treatment plant (STP), which was laid in 1993.
The water board has no mechanism to assess the condition of the sewer network. With industrial units generating 184 million liters per day (MLD) of effluents and residential colonies adding to the load, the water board was not able to take up maintenance of the trunk main.
“To assess the pipeline condition, the water board had invited expression of interest (EOI). Responding to the EOI, Sydney-based firm TTI Consulting Engineers came forward to conduct physical study using robotic CCTVs and acoustic profiler,” HMWS&SB chief general manager (E) PCC-II, D Sridhar Babu said.
“Initially, the six-km sewer line between Jeedimetla and Hotel Marriott will be assessed. The robotic CCTV will take images of the trunk main, while the acoustic profiler will look for defects in the pipeline,” the official added. The firm has been asked to submit a report on assessment of trunk main, manholes, chokages, siltation, flow analysis, rehabilitation measures and also a detailed project report (DPR) with designs, drawings and cost estimates for rehabilitation and strengthening of the trunk main between IDPL and Hotel Marriott, the official said. “Once the DPR is ready, the water board will take up strengthening of the trunk main work. The water board will pay Rs 31 lakh to the firm for the study,” he added.
