Scrapyard thief thwarted by Axis CCTV system

The site in St Helens, Lancashire, was frequently the subject of break-ins as people scavenge for materials – notably copper – that can be found in many of the thousands of fridges dumped as scrap, Axis said.

The security company, which only recently won the installation and monitoring contract, informed police when the intruder was detected.

Dave Leivers, the manager at Axis Security’s National Communications Centre, said: “We continued to track the intruder and guided the police to where he could be found.”

The would-be thief then attempted to conceal himself inside one of the fridges.

“The police dogs sniffed him out within a matter of moments, and he was handcuffed and removed from the site,” Leivers said. “The site manager was very satisfied with the performance of our system, especially when there was a noticeable reduction in site intrusions following the incident. Though it is unrealistic to believe that the thieves will stay away forever, the system has now proved its potential and, I am confident, will remain equally effective in the future protection of the site.”
