A high-level committee has recommended setting up of a specialised unit on the lines of Greyhounds and Octopus to take care of security issues of the Hyderabad metro rail. The committee, which included senior Telangana police officers, a counter-terrorism expert and other officials, submitted its recommendations to chief secretary Rajeev Sharma recently.
The committee suggested that a specialised unit be created for metro rail’s security operations as nearly 300 personnel would be deployed on the three metro corridors. The metro rail is expected to start its services between Nagole and Mettuguda from Ugadi (March 2015).
In the report, the metro rail security committee members said outer security and vehicular traffic management would be handled by police and recommended that internal security like frisking of passengers and other aspects be handed over to L&T, the developer of metro rail. The committee suggested setting up of police stations at three changeover points, sharing security duties between police and L&T. They also apprised the chief secretary on the likely financial implications of the security apparatus. (Source: Security Today)
Some time ago, a coordination committee for the HMR security was formed to decide on modalities that need to be worked out for security arrangement at parking lots, railway stations and coaches. The committee is likely to apprise the state government about the best available security option and cost for infrastructure like baggage scanners and CCTV cameras at all unmanned locations besides strategic points.
