Brogan posts fraud warning to data processors

Security International’s chief executive Chris Brogan has sent out a warning to all security managers responsible for Data Protection issues concerning an extraordinary fraud. Apparently, there are a number of organisations now in existence that purport to be an extension of the Information Commissioner’s office – and charge a princely GB pound 95 to assist companies with their notification.
“This is a total con,” said Brogan. “You only have to pay GB pound 35 per annum to notify the Information Commissioner that you are processing personal data under the Data Protection Act 1998.”
The bogus names to be ignored include: the Data Protection Act Registration Service, Data Protection Agency Services Ltd, the Data Protection Registration Agency, the Data Collection Enforcement Agency, the Data Registration Agency and the DPA Registration Agency.
