Taking the fight to cyberspace

Around 64% of those IT security specialists surveyed feel that Government must ally with the private sector to prevent the Internet from becoming a criminals’ playground.
Private sector organisations sell and distribute cryptographic technology that allows consumers to transact safely online, and prevents third parties from reading their e-mails. In the wrong hands, though, the same technology is used by criminals to organise their activities online with complete privacy.
Without the support of the private sector, which generates and sells the ‘keys’ used to operate cryptographic technology, the Government is virtually powerless to crack its complex codes and intercept e-mails being sent by suspected criminals.
The survey also criticises the ways in which cryptographic technology is being sold.
