As part of a European Union (EU)-led public consultation exercise, security companies and systems users have been asked to give their views on whether there should be EU-wide guidance on the use of video surveillance systems – in particular with respect to the handling and storage of recordings.
The European Commission wants comments to be sent in by 31 May on a comprehensive discussion paper of suggestions that has been drawn up by a special Working Group comprising European Data Protection Commissioners and ‘Watchdogs’ operating in line with EU Data Protection legislation. They have analysed existing European legislation and have provided advice on what kinds of surveillance activity may be illegal.
