One of four agencies recently (or being) established by the EU to focus on safety, the ASA is responsible for issuing safety certificates for aeroplanes and for their design and maintenance. Such work will focus on security as well as technical safety standards, and will see the agency taking over this work from EU Member States.
ASA executive director Patrick Goudou said: “Our first priority is a successful start to operations without any disruption to certification activities.”
The ASA has already been tasked with helping the European Commission draw up new security rules for the certification of airline operators and their personnel.
