Taking the heat
The FPC1031B from Fingerprint Cards (pictured) is a heavy-duty device which withstands extreme wear and temperatures.
It is also said to be a lot faster, more accurate and cheaper.
This “next generation” swipe sensor is more than just a new version – it is described as a new level of technology. If you already own a development kit, additional cost for new hardware is zero.
As regards image quality, eight-bit greyscale, 32-line pixel matrix and the company’s own 3-D algorithm result in improved recognition. And the high sensitivity and output signal level allows a more durable coating.

Fingers and hands
IR Recognition Systems, the biometric component of Ingersoll-Rand, has debuted the FingerKey DX fingerprint access control reader, a low-cost biometric alternative designed to secure smaller user populations.
“Ingersoll-Rand provides both fingerprint and hand geometry, the two top biometric technologies used for access control,” said director of marketing Bill Spence. “Installers Fingers and hands IR Recognition Systems, the biometric component of Ingersoll-Rand, has debuted the FingerKey DX fingerprint access control reader, a low cost biometric alternative designed to secure smaller user populations.
“Ingersoll-Rand provides both fingerprint and hand geometry, the two top biometric technologies used for access control,” said director of marketing Bill Spence. “Installers can fit the appropriate technology to each and every access point.”
The FingerKey DX reader includes a keypad and LCD display. An optional proximity reader, memory and Ethernet upgrades are also available. A user simply enters a PIN code or presents a proximity card, which calls up a template to scan.
Then a user places a finger on the FingerKey reader for verification against that local template. Verifica-tion takes less than two seconds.
Integration to access control systems is simple. On successful verification, the FingerKey outputs the ID number in a Wiegand format to an access control panel. Both standard and proprietary formats are supported. Alternate facility codes can be sent on invalid verifications and alarm conditions. A large red, green and amber light bar provides user feedback.
Two fingers per user can be scanned into the system. Fifty users is the standard configuration.

Facial recognition
Recognition technologies from Dec-tel Security Systems include facial recognition, ANPR and behavioural technology.
Dectel’s face recognition system allows the operator to:
- Monitor cameras for long periods without breaks
- Remember many unfamiliar faces
- Retrospectively monitor videotape
- Add value to existing CCTV systems
- Work from a single image of an individual
- Carefully monitor the database of selected target images
- Easily add this technology to existing camera networks
- Remotely monitor over a wireless network.

Self-contained reader
Bioscrypt says the V-Pass is the ultimate biometric reader for access to facilities. This reader eliminates the need for PINs, keys or cards to gain access to secure areas.
To gain access, the user simply places their finger on the reader, and in less than one second the V-Pass confirms or denies access based on an internal database of fingerprints of authorised readers.
The V-Pass performs onboard enrolment, identification and template storage for 200 fingerprints.
Benefits include:
- Fingerprint identification for access control installations in a self-contained reader
- Automatic finger detection provides one-touch identification
- Advanced patented fingerprint algorithm maintains accuracy and is robust when faced with scarred, dirty, wet or dry fingers
- Flexible communications options supporting Wiegand formats up to 64 bits
- User’s original fingerprint enrolments are maintained and employable across a variety of fingerprint imaging devices (sensors)
- Intuitive user interface with red, amber and green LED and tone signals
- Weather resistant housing.

Fingertip security
Sitel Electronics has launched an advanced range of locks, safes and door access interface systems using cutting edge biometric technology. Fingerlocks combine biometric technology, electronics and high quality engineering with procedures for enrolling or deleting of fingerprints made simple via LCD window exhibits. Once installed, authentication for access is completed within a second to open the door.
The electronics will allow an interface to a BMS programme where security management programmes are used.
Fingerlocks are not susceptible to varying weather conditions and will not be affected by exposure to ultra violet.Fingerlocks are being evaluated by Government Research Laboratories because of their numerous and obvious applications.

Affordable biometrics
The BioProx 007 from Sensor Access will enable installers to specify biometrics as a preferred technology and enable them to fully evaluate and test the product prior to use.
Sensor Access says more than 5,000 units have been installed worldwide. It is fully intelligent and can be operated in standalone mode or networked together using RS485.
Programming is undertaken using the keypad or by connection to a LAN/WAN and via RS232 to a PC where a simple but powerful software enables the user to implement Time and Attendance, single door Anti Passback and remote site dial-up.

The eyes have it
Biometrics isn’t just about fingerprints: from Panasonic comes iris recognition products.
The BM-ET100US Authenticam is a high speed, high precision ‘one glance’ identification system, which is said to have an error rate of less than 1/100,000 and is claimed to be the world’s most advanced access and entry point security identification system.
It is aimed at financial institutions, offices, labs, traffic control centres, airports and prisons.

Hand geometry
Recognition Systems Inc is a global leader in biometric access control, time and attendance and personal identification.
It has patented hand geometry technology, which verifies identity by the size and shape of the hand.
At IFSEC the company will show the latest dual biometrics reader and verifier, which demonstrates both hand geometry and facial recognition technology.
They include the HandKey (pictured) which has brought the benefits of biometric security to applications from health clubs and day centres to schools, laboratories and prisons.
