The town of Como in northern Italy has taken advantage of wireless mesh technology developed by Fluidmesh Networks. The first dome camera with the company’s Videomesh transmission technology was installed in January. By April, the other 11 cameras should be installed, creating one of the largest wireless mesh CCTV systems in Europe.
Videomesh 2200 is a wireless product with ‘Aointelligent’ transmission capabilities that Fluidmesh says are not present in traditional Wi-Fi or HiperLAN devices. The technology’s internal prioritisation and optimisation system is capable of detecting the type of packet transmitted (eg. TCP, UDP) and the employed video-encoding standard (eg. MPEG 4, M-JPEG). The wireless transmission system automatically optimises every packet transmission based on these characteristics.
Commenting on the technology, Giovanni Fazio, head of the City of Como’s IT department, said: “It allows us to move the cameras depending on our needs, creating dynamic wireless bridges. Moreover, in case one camera is not working, the others would still be able to keep streaming video by changing the wireless link in use.
