There is little doubt that CCTV has played its part in managing security in public spaces, and has worked to combat violent crime, but at what price?
Plenty of people are now suggesting that widespread surveillance is an invasion of their privacy. The latest Home Office report could well lead to a rise in demand for even greater levels of public protection, the paradox being that the ‘privacy lobby’ will strengthen its voice. It’s a difficult dilemma we face, and there are no easy answers.
At least part of the solution lies in regulation. Although we pride ourselves on successful self-regulation, some formalisation of the processes we follow – particularly in relation to CCTV installation and monitoring – may help assuage public concern. Of course, the Security Industry Authority has already made its first move. CCTV licences will be required from 20 March if operatives are pro-actively monitoring the activities of members of the public (whether they be in public areas or on private property).
Given that public safety is already high on the agenda, the security industry must keep this topic at the forefront of its thinking. Our goal must be to address public protection issues at all times, taking due account of the increasingly independent society in which we now live.
