State of Physical Access Trend Report 2024

Adoption of EN 50131 deferred

Today’s statement is supported by the BSIA, the Insurers’ Property Crime Research Group (IPCres), the National Security Inspectorate (NSI) and the Security Systems and Alarms Inspection Board (SSAIB).

BS EN 50131-1:2006 specifies the requirements for intrusion and hold-up alarm systems installed in buildings using specific or non-specific wired interconnections or wire-free interconnections.

The statement, which is also backed by The Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) and ACPO Scotland, is said to have been released in the interests of stability for the industry and its clients.

It begins, “The introduction of new or revised European Standards or Technical Specifications in the EN 50131 series for intruder alarm systems continues to be a challenge to the industry.”

A statement to installers in November last year opened with exactly the same words, and concerns have previously been raised over the level of communication between industry officials and installers on the ground.

In March of this year Security Installer started the ‘Making EN50131 Easier’ campaign to urges security bodies and manufacturers to do more to help installers along the EN50131 route.

Security Installer is looking to print details of how industry groups, and even manufacturers, are making EN50131 easier for installers.

In today’s release the association’s Technical Director, Alex Carmichael, comments: “There have been a number of delays in the development of other draft European standards in the family of EN 50131-1, and so a decision to delay the adoption of the standards has been made. This should ensure stability for the industry and its customers until such a time as the standards have been developed further and can be formally adopted.”

The BSIA’s 570 members provide over 70% of the UK’s security products and services.
