‘Dirty bomb’ training course launched
The International Training Academy in Aldershot will teach response teams how to work in areas contaminated by chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear (CBRN) substances.
Set up in response to growing concern that al-Qaeda terrorists plan to set off a nuclear device in a major Western city, the City and Guilds training course will focus on how to deal with the hazardous materials whilst preserving important evidence.
ITA Group, set up last year, developed the course as part of their ongoing expansion into the Homeland Security and defence sectors. According to their website, the course “enables effective preparation against an ever-more innovative range of weapons and techniques”.
Marketing Director Dave Hitchins said:
“The International Training Academy’s CBRN Search course provides an important source of knowledge for anyone performing frontline search operations, be that terrorist or criminal related.”
The course is said to be the result of talks with ITA Group sister company the CBRN Team, as well as knowledge gained through work with the British armed forces.
In November of last year, 34-year-old Dhiren Barot was sentenced to life in prison after he admitted conspiring to murder with a radioactive dirty bomb.
