State of Physical Access Trend Report 2024

Toys ‘R’ Us stores linked by new alarm system

Chiron’s “Iris” technology will replace the company’s existing line protection system and should allow its 73 stores to communicate directly with an alarm receiving centre (ARC).

Provided by contract management and monitoring provider SSS Management Services, the ARC is accredited to BS5979 and BSEN ISO 9002. The facility includes secure, digital-based TCP/IP communications for monitoring CCTV, access control and intruder alarms.

Toys ‘R’ Us made the switch following a series of successful trials in 2006 and the firm now features on Chiron’s growing client list that includes Halfords, Thomas Cook and Topps Tiles.

Chiron’s managing director, Ian Tredinnick, thinks the industry is beginning to see Iris as a “secure and sensible” alternative to BT Redcare.

“Most compelling is the fact that substantial cost savings can be made very soon after the initial capital investment on equipment,” he said.

Iris is also said to offer enhanced capabilities over its competitors, including the ability to accept dynamic and fixed IP addresses.
