The free event, organised by local firm Wessex Fire and Security, followed a Home Office report which found that 80 per cent of CCTV footage is useless to the police.
Wessex staff were joined by representatives from the National Security Inspectorate (NSI) and Dorset Police, who advised guests on how to provide more reliable CCTV footage.
Guest speakers included Geoff Ball, CCTV liaison officer for Dorset Police, and Andrew White, the NSI’s chief executive. Panasonic’s Jonathan Rickard also gave an online presentation on the merits of CCTV.
Wessex Fire and Security’s Tony Wheat then spoke on the benefits of standards and how they can be implemented.
“The industry is ever changing but expectation is the same – evidence is crucial,” he said.
“We all have a joint responsibility to produce quality images that are fit for the purpose and which will enable full confidence from the public and assist in the reduction of crime.”
Wessex’s director and general manager Stuart Fisher said he was pleased with the response from the group of delegates, which included councillors, police, consultants and other local authority representatives.
“We had an exceptional level of interest in this event as key influencers in the region realise the importance of upping their game when it comes to CCTV.”
