The deal covers three types of machine, each capable of scanning shipping containers and trucks for explosives or contraband.
“These state-of-the-art detection systems will be used to secure ports by rapidly assisting in the identification of potentially life threatening or illegal shipments,” said Stephen Phipson, group managing director of Smiths Detection.
The high-energy X-rays used by the HCV Mobile, HCV Gantry and HCV Pass-Through systems are said to be capable of penetrating 12 inches of steel.
Following the announcement shares in Smiths Detection rose 8p to GB pound 10.15, giving the firm a market value of GB pound 3.9bn.
