Climate change over the coming decades will create new security threats both in Britain and overseas, a report has warned.
As higher temperatures cause sea levels to rise and weather patterns to change, the world faces the prospect of wars over resources like water and food, according to the document.
There will also be pressure from hundreds of millions of “environmental refugees” fleeing their devastated homelands, said the paper from the Oxford Research Group.

The government is facing defeat over its legislation to hold terror suspects for up to 42 days without charge, which is to be published today without many of the safeguards demanded by opponents.
Government whips are believed to have warned ministers that if a Commons vote were held now on pre-charge detention it would be “touch and go” and the home secretary, Jacqui Smith, must go out and make the case if she is to win over sceptical Labour backbenchers.

As the president of the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments, Andrew Krepinevich’s job is to think about the security challenges of the future. He and his organisation have been working on a strategy to present to the next US president’s transition team.
Mr Krepinevich, who spent 21 years in the US army, has been an adviser to many senior officials in the Pentagon and has also guided US allies on strategy. As he sits in his corner office overlooking Washington’s K Street, he identifies four overlapping security questions for the US and its allies in the 21st century.
