CCTV isn’t all about cutting crime
As a retired detective, crime prevention officer and surveillance operative with 13 years’ experience of management in the commercial world with National Car Parks and, at present, the APC overnight parcel network, you’d think that I would fully subscribe to the contents of such articles. I do – but I often wonder why CCTV salesmen always talk about facial recognition, vehicle number plate recognition, crime deterrence and the prosecution of offenders.
In most industry sectors crime happens once in a while. In many cases, the cost is borne by insurance firms – not the company or organisation itself. Indeed, the claims are often regurgitated in higher insurance premiums, but this has a limited impact on the companies’ ‘bottom lines’ unless there’s a serious and prolonged spate of criminality.
Again, you would think that with my background I would forcibly sell CCTV to my employers based on the crime scenario, but this would be backing a non-runner. However, if you want to grab the attention of any company director or high-powered manager just mention Corporate Manslaughter and watch their body language. They’re all-too-aware of their culpability under this legislation and other Health and Safety regulations.
There are other problems companies become saddled with such as those associated with training, hours of work, time wasted by staff on unofficial tea breaks and damage to company buildings and property. No CCTV salesman ever mentions these little details when they vigorously attempt to make me buy their systems.
Just for once, I wish they’d ask me why I believe I want CCTV and not try and spout ‘crime deterrence’ messages all the while. Cutting crime isn’t the full picture when it comes to CCTV, you know.
