Sony, Bosch and Axis to develop network video standard

This is the first cooperative effort of its kind in the security industry. Currently there is no global standard defining how network video products such as cameras, video encoders and video management systems should communicate with each other.

The new standard is expected to comprise interfaces for specifications such as video streaming, device discovery, intelligence metadata and more.

The framework of the standard, incorporating key elements of network video interoperability, will be released in October 2008.

Interoperability between different vendors’ products is expected to simplify the installation of network video products regardless of brand, and end users should benefit with greater freedom when choosing equipment.

Other companies will be invited to join the forum once it is fully established later this year.

Sony marketing division senior general manager Matt Soga said the initial discussion between the three firms took place several months ago.

The main goal of the new standard is to facilitate the integration of various brands of network video equipment and to help manufacturers, software developers and independent software vendors to ensure product interoperability.

Axis Communications president Ray Mauritsson said: “An open standard will make it even easier for integrators and end users to benefit from the many possibilities offered by IP-based video surveillance technology.”

Bosch’s Gert van Iperen said: “For manufacturers of network video hardware and software, the forum and its standard will be an efficient way to ensure product interoperability.”

“We entered this discussion based on our common belief that an open standard will provide great benefits for users and everyone involved in the security industry,” Sony’s Yoshinori Onoue said.

Norbain general manager Alun John said his firm would probably look to work together with the open forum. “Working together is the right way to go about establishing a standard for the industry,” he said. But he also emphasized the need for the standard to be flexible to allow for technology changes.
