University of Huddersfield to host international Criminology Conference
The British Society of Criminology aims to further the interests and knowledge of both academics and professionals engaged in criminological research and education, and the conference reflects both the society and the Applied Criminology Centre’s (ACC) commitment to building links between research and practice.
This event will highlight the excellence of contemporary research in areas such as crime prevention, youth justice and the rehabilitation of offenders, and will provide a forum for incisive debate between academics, practitioners and policy makers. Crime and anti-social behaviour are topics that regularly dominate the media, and the debates will throw light on some of the issues that generate so much public anxiety and interest.
Discussing the event with info4security, Professor Alex Hirschfield – director of the ACC – commented: “This is a tremendous opportunity to raise the profile of the University and that of Huddersfield. It’s an honour to host this highly prestigious event. Criminology is such a topical subject that there is hardly a day that goes by when it is not the lead story on TV or in newspaper headlines. That’s all the more reason to be objective about what’s going on, to avoid exaggerating the risks of being caught up in crime. Criminology can help keep our feet firmly on the ground when it comes to crime.”
Members of the ACC will present their research covering all aspects of criminology, from crime prevention, policing and prisons through to surveillance, anti-social behaviour and counter-terrorism. There’s even a session on crimes against the environment; the new area of ‘Green Criminology’.
This international event boasts over 350 delegates from all over the world, including plenary speakers Professor Julian Roberts from Oxford University, Sandra Walklate from the University of Liverpool and Martin Narey, the chief executive of Barnados.
