MFD scoops prestigious design award
In the Centre for the Protection of National Infrastructure-sponsored awards, MFD ran out the overall winner in the category of ‘Security in the Public Realm’ for its work on a Hostile Vehicle Mitigation (HVM) scheme at BAA’s Heathrow Terminal 5.
The Judging Panel commented: “This was a uniquely challenging project where both civil and security engineering skills were needed to design and construct an effective scheme in a pedestrian permeable and aesthetically attractive area.”
They then went on to say that they were impressed by the very “rapid pace of applied consultancy” to innovate with foundation designs and adapt newly-developed and tested bollard systems to fit within the ground conditions and depths available at the site.
Highly commended for the Scottish Parliament project
As well as picking up the winner’s trophy, a second HVM scheme of MFD’s, undertaken for the Scottish Parliament and involving the design of a vehicle entry control system was commended.
On this occasion, the Judging Panel stated: “A well thought out and executed security solution using clever detailing and high quality finishes. The scheme included some ambitious traffic management arrangements and the installation of impact-tested bollards. It’s one of the first uses of a particular rising arm barrier design at a UK civilian location.”
Speaking about these successes, a delighted Gary Heward – MFD’s director of blast and protective design – told SMT Online: “On behalf of MFD, I’m delighted to have won this award for one of the many Hostile Vehicle Mitigation schemes we have undertaken in recent years.”
Heward continued: “The BAA T5 Project challenged all the normal engineering principles and timescales that one would normally have to complete in the detailed design of PAS 68 crash-rated bollards. The team worked extremely well in developing a unique foundation solution to enable the entire installation of 120 bollards to be conceived, designed, procured and installed in the final six weeks before Terminal 5 was officially opened.”
