Security Excellence Awards 2011 preview: Security manager categories

The 2011 Security Excellence Awards take place on Wednesday October 19 at London’s Park Lane Hilton. Find out more about the SEAs here.

Contract Security Manager of the Year – sponsored by Ward Security

This award will be presented to an individual who has demonstrated excellence in a senior security management role and has the ability to inspire and lead a team of security professionals. The category is for security managers employed by a private sector security solutions provider

Phil Carruthers (CIS Security)

Working within the educational sector, Phil has greatly assisted his team by devising new Assignment Instructions. He has also fostered links with local businesses, PCSOs and SO15 by setting up a Managers Networking Forum. His commitment to the client is “outstanding”.

Justine Craig (The Shield Guarding Company)

Justine is employed as team manager at the famous Bullring retail centre in the heart of Birmingham. That team is over 70 in number, with 18 officers on duty in any one shift. Justine designed and implemented the ‘Dual Role’ system, better integrating the car park and Control Room teams by effectively ‘cross-training’ their roles.

Janet De Luca (Axis Security)

Janet De Luca manages over 50 permanent staff members at what is arguably the world’s leading arts venue: London’s Southbank Centre. Janet works tirelessly with her team on building links to vulnerable groups in the area, the end result being a dramatic fall in crime.

John Edwards (Oltec Group Facilities Management)

At Keel Row Shopping Centre in the North East, John proposed a security solution involving intruder detection systems, alarm response and remote monitoring that allowed for 84 hours of ‘out of hours’ guarding to be removed. In Year One, this saved the client GB pound 44,000 without any redundancies or tail-off in service levels.

Bob Milnes (Integrated Security Consultants)

Bob works on the Wembley Stadium contract. He was responsible for re-launching the Metropolitan Police Service ‘Operation Fairway’ training programme, ensuring that not only are the safety team involved but also the wider Football Association grouping. His constant contact with the IT Department benefits CCTV efficiencies.

Adrian Moore (VSG)

Adrian is a hugely respected individual working on the Lloyds Banking Group contract. His can-do attitude readily promotes awareness in the security team. Most impressive is the fact that Adrian has managed to deliver GB pound 1.5 million of savings for the client in his first year, with no detrimental impact on security or service standards.

Joe Purser (Advance Security UK)

Joe is responsible for security services at the UK headquarters of State Street Bank on London’s high profile Canary Wharf Estate. He manages 40 security staff with great skill, and has drawn up detailed business continuity plans in conjunction with the client.

Robert Ross (Sodexo)

In his role as security services manager for Aberdeen, Bob Ross looks after security for five clients: BG Group, Nexen, Talisman Energy, Premier Oil and SubSea 7. Using his initiative, Bob put in place a ten-man relief officer team to remove any reliance on agencies. In this way, a far more consistent service has been delivered to customers.

Gavin Sanger (Unipart Security Solutions)

As site security manager at the Vodafone warehouse complex, Gavin is responsible for stock loss detection and prevention where goods held are valued at over GB pound 250 million. Effective control and management of the 28-strong on-site security officer team and a new policy for Vodafone staff have reduced losses to almost zero.

Steve Sullivan (Wilson James)

Steve Sullivan has overseen client PwC’s major mobilisation project, which involved transferring a team of over 100 security and welcome staff members into a flagship building. He also assumed overall responsibility for the new Building Control Centre which incorporates state-of-the-art access control, CCTV and fire detection systems.

In-House Security Manager of the Year – sponsored by Ecovert FM

This award will be presented to an individual who has demonstrated excellence in a senior security management role and an ability to inspire and lead a team of dedicated security professionals. The category is for security managers employed directly by the company for whose assets they are ultimately responsible

Paul Manning (Middlesex University)

Paul Manning has risen through the ranks from security officer to manager thanks to sheer hard work and dedication to the cause. He’s the lead for the CampusWatch scheme at Middlesex University, which is a partnership between the educational establishment and the local police. Indeed, Paul was the first to join that team in his capacity as a Special Constable. In recent times, Paul has arranged for self awareness/defence training for females on campus, established a central Control Room and introduced improved reporting and information analysis procedures which have resulted in greatly reduced criminality. An advocate of CPD, he also holds a BA (Honours) degree in Security and Risk Management.

Martin McInerney (William Hill)

Martin McInerney is William Hill’s senior security manager for London and the South East, and is responsible for nigh on 900 fully licensed betting offices. He manages a team of investigators tasked with handling fraud investigations, risk assessments and dealing with serious incidents (robbery, burglary and anti-social behaviour, etc). Martin has been instrumental in positively changing the security regime within the London area, in particular with regard to the approach taken by senior and mid-level operations managers. He has done so thanks to “excellent interpersonal skills and business understanding”. His regional security team was recently honoured with the Support Function of the Year Award.

Clint Reid (Marks & Spencer plc)

Over the last five years, Clint – who began his career as a store detective – has successfully worked with various security partners to develop a ‘Total Security Solution’ that delivers a ‘Best-in-Class’ operation across the Marks & Spencer estate (which numbers over 600 locations). Now, the focus is very much on the output rather than the input: innovation is the key driver, as is Return on Investment. Examples of innovation have been Clint’s introduction of mobile CCTV vans to tackle car park crime and the instigation of an all-new EAS solution that has driven down stock losses by 30%. In 2010, Clint’s security philosophy was recognised by Securitas Security Services and SMT Online in the form of the Good Customer Award.

Mark Smallwood (Wales Millennium Centre)

Mark Smallwood is fully committed to providing the highest level of security. By way of proving that assertion, Mark has introduced ‘precinct partners’ meetings at the Wales Millennium Centre, duly involving the South Wales Police and representatives from the local authority as well as business and community groups. In this way, ties are strengthened with Counter-Terrorism Security Advisors and NaCTSO. At Mark’s request, the in-house security operation also offers its services as a base for Project Argus. In addition, Mark’s people management skills are second to none. He continually promotes a positive attitude and regularly makes a point of telling each and every security team member that they can and will achieve.
