Fire safety engineering has taken another step towards becoming an established discipline with the creation of a chair in structural fire engineering at the University of Edinburgh. The new post will be part of the Fire Engineering Centre at the university. It is jointly funded by the Ove Arup Foundation and construction and property management company, Bovis Lend Lease.
The new professor will work with the existing professor of fire safety engineering and professor of architecture technology. The aim is to ensure that structural fire safety is fully integrated into the design process, and to generate a core of leaders to ensure this becomes a fundamental part of the built environment.
Dr Barbara Lane, associate director of Arup Fire commented: “Together the three professorships can support the goal of bridging architects, structural engineers and fire safety engineers: the most important aspect of making this a real step change in design. In addition, the role of the structural fire engineering professorship is to provide impetus and to make the statement that this new approach to design and the skills required to make it a success are desirable, worthwhile and career making.”
