To help ensure correct and consistent installation, a new scheme for passive fire protection installers has been launched by the LPCB.
LPS 1531 is designed to help ensure that those who install or apply passive fire protection products have the necessary skills and technical ability to do this correctly. The standard follows the earlier publication of LPS 1500, which approves firms installing fire resistant compartment wall systems.
“Most passive fire protection products have third party approval or accreditation of their fire test results,” commented Ian Stewart, the scheme’s manager at the LPCB. “However, we still need to achieve a level playing field for the passive fire protection installers. It is often the case that quality products are still being installed incorrectly, which may render them ineffective in a fire.”
Companies in the scheme will be able to self certify their work by issuing LPCB Certificates of Conformity. Inspectors will carry out on-site installation checks on a selection of their projects.
The benefits of using independent third party certification schemes are recognised in Approved Document B (volume 2) of the Building Regulations for England & Wales, and in the guides to the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order.
