Fish processing warehouse destroyed in blaze

[

A fire has destroyed a seafood processing plant in Devon causing GB pound 1 milllion of damage and putting the livelihoods of the firm’s 50 staff and its fishermen suppliers at risk.

According to a report in This is Plymouth.co.uk, more than 50 firefighters worked for over seven hours to put out the fire, which destroyed the 70m x 30m warehouse building of the Blue Sea Food Company at the Torbay Business Park in Yalberton.

Firefighters were hampered in fighting the fire because of an initial shortage of water pressure on the site, and by dense black smoke coming from plastic filled insulating panels used internally. “Because of the nature of the material, we could not send crews in because of the amount of black smoke and the threat of collapse,” said Torquay watch commander, Rod Schneider.

Incident Commander Robbie Wood said that fire investigators were still working to establish the cause of the fire but it is thought it could be electrical.
