Hard-hitting campaign highlights fire risks

[

A hard hitting campaign showing the disfiguring results of burns which aims to cut the number of deaths from fire has been launched by West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue.

The Safer Life campaign promotes the message that carelessness kills, focussing in the biggest contributing factors in dwelling fires – alcohol, smoking and misuse of electrical equipment. For the first time, university students are being targeted in the campaign.

The campaign includes posters, drinks mats and vehicle advertising and targets pubs, clubs, shops and other public areas. Bluetooth technology will be used at bus stations to target commuters and encourage them to book a home fire safety check. A website has also been set up where people can view the campaign and safety information.

Brian Robinson, senior community safety officer at West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said: “The statistics show that there is a definite increase in fires in the home during the colder winter months…”

The campaign aimed at students is fronted by Leeds University student Sorrel Sheppard, who appears in the images with made-up burns along with the slogan – “I got first degree burns”. She is also working as an ambassador to raise fire safety awareness among her fellow students.
