Bed and furniture supplies in Scotland were hit this week when a large fire on Wednesday severely damaged a distribution warehouse belonging to bed retailer Dreams.
Around 50 firefighters were confronted with a well developed fire when they arrived at the 6000m2
warehouse in Cambuslang, near Glasgow. During the early stages of the incident, crews were forced to fight the fire externally due to the intense heat and smoke. At the height of the blaze eight fire appliances, including two aerial rescue pumps, were on the scene.
The warehouse site is relatively isolated so no surrounding properties were
at risk from the fire. Ironically, the warehouse is next door to a site
planned for a new fire and rescue training centre.
“It was too dangerous to risk crews entering the building and the fire was fought
externally with the use of aerial platforms,” a Strathclyde Fire and
Rescue spokesman told the Glasgow Evening Times. “It was a difficult
fire to tackle because of the foam content in the mattresses which were
stored inside. It created a lot of thick black smoke which reduced
visibility for crews.”
An investigation into the cause of the fire has started.
Meanwhile, more beds and mattresses were destroyed in a fire at a furniture
warehouse in Coventry. According to a report in the Coventry Evening
Telegraph, 15 firefighters spent around two hours tackling the blaze at
a lock-up unit, which had just been converted from its previous use as
a music studio. A West Midlands Fire Service spokesman said it was a
“severe fire” which damaged 30% of the building.
