Bio-fuel warehouse destroyed in blaze

[

A warehouse in Yarmouth may have to be demolished after a huge fire tore through the building in the early hours of Monday morning. An added complication was the presence of LPG and hydrogen cylinders as well as quantities of methanol and bio-diesel.

Around 70 firefighters and several support appliances tackled the blaze which broke out at the Baker House premises at 3.30am and was brought under control by around 6.00am. The premises was being used to manufacture products for the offshore oil industry.

The roof was destroyed and what remains of the building is currently unsafe to enter, so hampering the investigation process. Building control and other engineers are deciding whether it can be made safer or if it will have to be demolished. Two adjoining buildings were also damaged.

Martin Hudson, manager of the fire crew from Yarmouth, said that firefighters initially had to proceed with caution until it was established that there were no hazardous chemicals on the site. He told the Norwich Evening News: “All the supplies to the building have been seriously damaged. The roof has completely fallen in and the walls that are standing, if they don’t fall down during the day, will probably be pushed down.”
