BP refinery fire leaves one ‘seriously injured’

A worker has been seriously injured during a fire at a BP refinery – the second blaze in the space of three days at its European plants.

The worker remains in hospital after the fire in Lingen, Germany on Tuesday 4 October in the early hours of the morning. The blaze happened on one of its crude distillation units. The unit had just come back after summer maintenance.

The fire was under control after around 20 minutes. The worker was ‘seriously injured’, the company said, with another worker slightly injured.

The incident followed a blaze on Sunday 2 October at BP’s Castellon facility, in Spain. The fire happened in a furnace at around 4.30pm and lasted around half an hour. No one was hurt.

BP is investigating both incidents.
