New detection and alarm system for brewing plant

Beer bottleA wide-ranging detection and alarm system has been installed at brewer InBev’s plant in Magor, Monmouthshire.

Advanced Fire Systems selected and installed a system based around Hochiki’s Enhanced Systems Protocol (ESP). Over 500 individual fire detection products have been installed across the site and are managed via 10 addressable panels.

The new system used the existing wiring infrastructure and every detector from the previous system had to be located and replaced, including over 100 devices installed within voids and false ceilings.

A wide variety of Hochiki products were installed including HCP-E call points, ACB-EW waterproof multi-heat sensors, CHQ-WS2 base sounders, sounder controllers, mains relay output units and multi-sensors.

The previous system suffered from false alarms generated by steam produced in the manufacturing process, so a combination of heat and smoke detectors was used to minimise this. A number of visual alarm devices were also installed in areas of high ambient noise, while combined sounders and beacons were installed in the brewing, filtration, bottling and kegging, and warehousing areas.

The Magor site covers around 60 acres with around 200 employees on site.
