Crews tackle tricky blaze at McDonald’s

More than 60 firefighters have tackled a fire at a McDonald’s restaurant in Preston.

The blaze is believed to have started in a deep fat fryer at around 8.40am on 29 March and spread through the smoke extraction system.

Customers were evacuated from the restaurant as thick black smoke filled the dining area, according to the Lancashire Evening Post. Nearby businesses were also asked to evacuate as surrounding roads were cordoned off.

The initial fire was quickly extinguished but crews had to tackle secondary outbreaks of fire in ducting and ceiling spaces.

Crews used breathing apparatus, two main jets, two hose reels and an aerial ladder platform to fight the fire.

Dick Stott, group manager for Lancashire Fire and Rescue, told the Lancashire Evening Post: “There is a fairly big clean-up for McDonald’s to pick up.

“What appears to have happened is the range has ignited, which has then gone into the ducting which takes all the fumes out of the building. The fire has got into the ceiling in various parts of the building.”
