Fires break out as temperatures soar

Fires at the weekend have highlighted the need to show extra care during the current hot weather in the UK.

A factory in Cumbria caught fire after debris in the guttering heated up on Saturday and caught fire. Fire crews despatched an aerial ladder platform and three other fire appliances to bring the factory blaze under control.

A spokesman for Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service said this kind of fire is not unusual.

“It’s a combination of heat from the sun and the quantity of debris in the guttering.

“We did give advice at the scene on potential areas where debris could build up. There’s not any real way you can avoid it happening – basically it’s just bad luck.”

Meanwhile, Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service were called to at least two out of control barbeque fires. In the first, two people were injured in a fire in Northborough, near Peterborough, after attempting to light a barbecue with petrol.

Tony Fitzjohn, watch manager at Dogsthorpe Fire Station saidm, "Never pour petrol, or any other accelerant onto a bonfire or barbecue.

"Due to this action, two people have suffered severe burns, requiring hospital attention."

Then in another barbecue fire, a gas barbecue got out of control leading the fire service to issue this advice:

"We would urge residents to use a new gas cylinder at the start of barbecue season, and not one left over from last year which could have become damaged over the winter months.

"It is also a good idea to check the gas cylinder connections and pipe work for leaks by brushing soapy water all around the joints and watching for the bubbles if a leaky joint is found."
