GM recall almost 500,000 cars over fire risk

General Motors have announced a recall of nearly 500,000 Chevrolet Cruze vehicles manufactured between October 2009 and May 2012 due to a possible fire risk.

According to the product recall there is a danger that spilled or dripping oil might collect in the engine shield near hot engine or exhaust surfaces resulting in a fire.

The product recall states that the consequence of such a scenario “could result in an engine compartment fire, possibly causing injury or death.”

The recall affects 466,387 Chevrolet Cruze’s built in Ohio and sold in the US, Canada and Israel.

Repairs will be carried out free of charge from mid-July with a modification to the engine shield and protective tape to the electric power steering of manual models to be carried out.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration began an investigation into the Cruze in April following two fires in the engine compartment of two 2011 model vehicles. This investigation was later expanded to include the 2012 model.

“The most important thing for our customers to know is that we are proactively working to assure the Cruze is the safe and durable car they purchased,” said GM vice president of Global Quality Alicia Boler-Davis. “We are sorry for any inconvenience caused by these actions.”

The recall follows the recall of 8,000 hybrid Chevrolet Volt’s at the start of the year.
