Siemens is supplying security, safety and building-automation technology for the World Cup stadium in Brazil’s capital.
Built in 1974 the Garrincha National Stadium – or Estádio Nacional Mané Garrincha – in Brasilia is hosting seven World Cup games, the first of which is Switzerland versus Ecuador on 15 June. The arena, one of the world’s most advanced stadiums, will include 4,000 cameras, 150 turnstiles for controlling access at some 6,000 control points and approximately 6,000 fire detection points.
With a seating capacity of 70,000 the stadium is the country’s second largest sports arena, but Siemens’ cameras can troublemakers throughout the stadium’s stands.
Managed by high processing capacity software, the system delivers password-protected, hierarchical access control, so that the police, fire brigade and private security firms can identify potential trouble spots in the crowd.
By integrating the database with ticket sale systems, the access control system will enable the facility’s operators to promote a wide variety of events. Turnstiles at the arena’s entry points will read identification technologies such as 1D and 2D barcodes, mifare and smartcards.
As the system’s data will be fully encrypted, security of operations is guaranteed and the opportunity for ticket forgery minimised. Critical staff will be required to carry keys to open the numerous stadium gates.
All technologies will be integrated into a command and control centre.
The Garrincha National Stadium is also the first sports stadium in the world to be awarded the most prestigious sustainability certificate, the LEED Platinum.
Siemens’ solutions have already been installed at more than 150 sports facilities worldwide, including the Allianz Arena in Munich, Germany.
