New research from Omdia has found that 51% of leading Chief Security Officers (CSOs) are already using video surveillance systems for facility safety applications. This response rate increased to 89% when CSOs were asked whether they expect to be using video surveillance for this application within 3 years.
Author of the report and Principal Consultant at Omdia, Niall Jenkins, provides further insight.
The research comes from a Chief Security Officer Insights report, where Omdia partnered with the International Security Management Association (ISMA) to gain unique insight from 163 currently practising CSOs.
Video surveillance is an increasingly flexible solution for CSOs. It can be used to support facility safety with applications such as video fire alarms. It can also be used in people safety applications, for example, providing virtual guarding to protect remote employees.
In fact, 49% of respondents stated that people safety functionality is currently supported by their video surveillance system.
According to the research, operational management, such as the monitoring of staff activity, and operational efficiency for process optimisation, are other functionalities that will be important use-cases for video surveillance in the future.
Profit generation, such as building marketing data, was the least important use-case for video surveillance systems with only 20% of CSOs expecting to use their video surveillance system for this function within the next three years.
Integration and AI are important features for security solutions
The report also explored which features or functionality respondents would most like included in their future security solutions. 72% of CSOs stated that integration across security systems was one of their top three priorities.
At the other end of the scale, frictionless interaction, including haptics and audio control, as well as wireless networking, were the least common responses.
Given the broad impact of cyber security, it also ranked relatively low with only 17% of respondents stating it was a top priority. This could be due to IT leaders having primary responsibility for cyber protection.
Cards remain the primary access control authentication technology
Access control cards were the primary authentication technology used by over 90% of the CSOs surveyed in the research. A hybrid solution was the next most common response, with mobile (BLE/NFC based) and biometrics only used by 1-2% of the respondents.
Despite the relatively low penetration of biometrics, CSOs are interested in the technology. Open feedback for the report included respondents that would like to install biometrics but are concerned with privacy and opt-outs that can limit the usage.
There were also CSOs looking to expand their biometric technology from fingerprint to face recognition where budget and acceptance levels make this possible.
