State of Physical Access Trend Report 2024

Access control installation: Security on the cards

When a global property services company decided to move its London offices into a six storey building in the heart of the West End it needed a state of the art access control system that suited the prestigious premises.

The company, King Sturge, called in WOT Security Group, one of the leading independent companies in the industry.

The NSI Gold installer undertook the work after a meeting with King Sturge who felt confident in WOT’s skill and its ability to meet the strict deadline.

Louise Polledri, King Sturge’s project manager, said: “I already had a good idea of the security measures required in the building but WOT went above and beyond, making suggestions outside of the usual specification. They demonstrated that they had a broad range of skills, adequate to meet a project of this value.”

Best match

WOT recommended the integrated systems solution from Honeywell Security as the best match to the customer’s requirements.

It installed a WIN-PAK access control system which would enable integration with CCTV cameras and a Fusion DVR.

The system included two speed lanes in the reception area and gate control for the disabled.

To limit access to certain floors the lifts were integrated into the access control system – for example, access cards for employees of the tenant on the fifth floor allow them to access that floor only.

Access to the retail units are through the stores’ main entrances or through the loading bays, so retail staff did not need to be issued with cards. However, the entrances are alarmed and also connected to the cameras so that, in the event of a trigger, an alarm appears on the control screen enabling operators to identify the alarm location and view images via the Fusion DVR.

The security is monitored and controlled using CAD floor plans.

System pre-configured

WOT carried out the installation under exceptionally strict and tight deadlines which called for the highest flexibility. As much as possible, the system was tested and pre-configured ahead of the final installation. Paul Morris, managing director of WOT, said: “Due to our confidence in the Honeywell solution we were certain that we would be able to deliver within the specified timeframe plus be flexible enough to make changes on the fly.”

The system was delivered on time and the 530 members of staff were issued with security badges.

The smart cards can also be used in cashless vending and for document print out requests on King Sturge’s printers.
