State of Physical Access Trend Report 2024

Ambulance service access system wins top award

The installation of a Bewator Entro 5 access system won the Hospital Security Award category in the Health Business Awards, designed to recognise excellence in NHS services.

Because the service has more than 2,500 employees, 70 separate premises and demanding security requirements, providing effective security control was a significant challenge, said the judges.

But they were impressed by the way Presec “comprehensively and cost-effectively” addressed the challenge.

The service’s Entro 5 system links sites throughout Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire and Derbyshire to its headquarters in Nottingham via network connections.

At each of the sites, tag activated control is provided over the entrance doors, the doors to the drug store and those to the key safe. The tags used are compact, lightweight and “virtually impossible to copy”, says Bewator.

Operators at the HQ can instantly programme any tag reader at any site to allow or deny access to a particular tag. The system is completely flexible over which employees are allowed access to particular ambulance stations and even to specific areas within those stations.

If tags are lost or retained by former employees, they can be immediately removed from the system.

Said EMAS spokesman Chris Newton: “We’re delighted to have won this important award.

“Our employees now have fast, easy access to all the areas they need to enter, which can make a big difference in an emergency. They no longer have to worry about losing keys or forgetting codes. The new system puts our managers completely in control of who can go where”.
