State of Physical Access Trend Report 2024

New BSIA guide on sustainable access control

The guide provides advice on how access control systems can be integrated and used in a more energy efficient way to reduce an organisation’s environmental footprint.

It presents a selection of case studies giving examples of various access control solutions providing an increase in energy efficiency. Measures include integration with other security solutions and providing audits of occupancy in a building which, in turn, can inform decisions on energy saving measures for lighting and heating and ventilation systems, for example.

Other ways of saving energy, according to the guide, are integrating access control with Building Energy Management Systems, avoiding heat wastage by using security revolving doors and using low voltage turnstiles.

Mike Sussman, chairman of the BSIA’s Access Control Section, said: “This guide is a great tool for a host of different organisations and companies, providing information from some of the most experienced experts in the industry. Any company looking to create a more efficient security system and wanting to manage their environmental footprint would benefit from considering the solutions outlined in this guide.”
